Originally hailing from a small town just north of Nashville, Tenn., I appreciate the finer things in life like LEGO sets, good bourbon, vintage Britney Spears and high-fives after winning small coding and design victories.

I currently work at The Pudding/Polygraph, where I use data to craft visual essays. I have previously worked at CNN, Guardian US, ABC News, The Huffington Post, the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank in Washington, DC., and the Hartford Courant and the Baltimore Sun.

As a former newspaper page designer it was really important for me to see this work by @yesitsalex. It critiques the NYTimes’ front page the day after a man linked to white nationalists plowed through a crowd of people with his car, killing one and injuring 19 others. There are always deadlines to be met and editions that let you refine, but the conversation about what goes where needs to start outside of these considerations. We need to be precise in our words and in our presentation. And we need to make sure that diverse voices are decision makers. I’ve always believed design has the power to change minds. Let’s start using it.
